Patron The patron of the Academy Graduates Association is Major General P.J. Day, AO. Major General P.J. Day, AO graduated from the RMC Duntroon in 1956 and was awarded the Queen's medal. Commissioned as a lieutenant in the Australian Staff Corps, he was allocated to the Royal Australian Engineers and posted to Adelaide where he completed a degree in civil engineering. Appointments as a young officer included troop commander in field and construction squadrons, an attachment to the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority, and exchange instructor in road and airfield design at the Royal School of Military Engineering in Britain. He commanded 17 Construction Squadron in South Vietnam in 1966-67 followed by attendance at the Army Staff College. He served in Malaysia and Singapore as the Brigade Major on Headquarters 28 Commonwealth Infantry Brigade and then, on promotion to lieutenant colonel, as the Chief Engineer 4th Military District. Subsequent appointments were: Defence Attache in the Philippines (1973-74); Director of Engineers - Army (1976-79); and Director General Accommodation and Works - Army in the rank of brigadier from 1979 to 1982. He was awarded the post-nominals psc, jssc, and rcds on completion of staff courses in Australia and Britain. In 1987 he was made an officer in the Order of Australia. In 1984 he was promoted to major general and posted as GOC Logistic Command in Melbourne. His last two appointments in the Army were Deputy Chief of the General Staff (1985-86) and Commandant of the Defence Force Academy from 1986 to 1990. When he retired he undertook courses in figure and portrait painting at the Canberra School of Arts. Oil painting is now his main hobby. He was the ADF Member of the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal from 1991 to 1996 and Patron of the RSPCA (ACT) from 1993 to 1998. He is a Legatee with Canberra Legacy and a National Trustee for the RSL. He has been married to Margaret for 44 years and they have four children and five grandchildren. April 2003 |
